But as far as anyone can tell, this upcoming IPO has one question on everybody’s mind: how much is it worth? Unfortunately the truth is that there isn’t an official price yet. Yet, one can learn about valuation, and do some basic calculations with the numbers that Jio has already provided.
What Does the Price Band Tell You?
The price band is the real starting point. It sets the range for each share, and the issue size shows how much money is being raised. For Jio, the price band, dates, lot size, and issue size are all still to be announced. Anywhere you see a value until they get here, it’s just a guess.

How Do Analysts Value a Company?
The majority have a couple of basic tools. None of these provides the perfect answer and analysts may employ multiple of them. P/E is the sum of profits multiplied by a growth and risk factor. Value vs. net worth is the Price to Book. Peer comparison checks rivals. For the Jio IPO, the latest published profit is ₹30,053 crore, and earnings per share is ₹33.63, versus ₹12.83 for Bharti Airtel.
Let’s Try a Simple Sum
Take profit of ₹30,053 crore and pick a P/E. These are illustrations, not forecasts or price targets.
| P/E used | Value in ₹ lakh crore |
|---|---|
| 20 | About 6.0 |
| 25 | About 7.5 |
| 30 | About 9.0 |
Different analysts will pick different numbers, and that’s normal. Choose your own multiple, since fast growth can justify a higher number. The fresh issue is up to 27 crore shares, roughly 3% of today’s share count by my rough math, so dilution looks small.
What Could Move the Value?
Growth, debt, and competition all matter. Revenue and profit have risen for three years, which helps. Past profits don’t guarantee future ones. Borrowings of about ₹71,529 crore and tariff pressure can weigh on value. Strengths like 524.4 million subscribers and a vertically integrated network help it. Telecom licences and spectrum renewals need heavy spending.
How Will Allotment Work If Demand Is High?
Retail investors get at least 35% of the issue, and KFin Technologies is the registrar. If the issue is oversubscribed, shares go by lottery or in proportion, and each PAN can apply only once. Heavy demand means a random draw, so a big bid doesn’t help. Not allotted? The blocked amount is released. Many investors apply through family accounts, each with their own PAN.
Before the Price Band Is Out, What Should You Do?
Keep your demat and UPI ready. Set aside the full amount, since it stays blocked until allotment. Read the draft papers, then the final prospectus. Check dates twice, since pre apply opens before the issue. Compare the price with earnings and peers, and decide your own limit in advance. Retail applications go up to ₹2 lakh.
Final Thoughts
Nobody can name Jio’s exact worth until the price band is out. Until then, only simple maths can help in setting expectations, not predicting prices. Avoid definite numbers, look in ranges, and only invest what you can afford. Patience is cheaper than regret. Market risks effect investments made in securities markets.
